Western Alps Tour - including the Top of Europe
Time & Location
About the Event
Join us as we take on the mountaineous Alps along its western edge. We have driven this area many times before and for this year we want to explore some new areas and find some new forts and mountain lakes.
On this tour we will gain and lose some serious elevation daily. One of the first tracks we climb to 1250m with an incredible view of the valley below. You will be blown away by that view alone. But every corner you turn presents a new view and another memory. As we go further south we climb higher every day, camping at new spots, witnessing giants of mountains. With a mixture of wild camps and campsites this trip will keep everyone happy. We will get the chance to buy local produce straight from the farmers. We will see a great variety of wildlife, but only if you can find time to take your eyes off the winding roads. There is the opportunity to stay in a hotel at our mid-way point if you fancy a night away from the canvas. We shall explore forts and tunnels, some more remote than others. Our own highlight of the tour we shall keep under wraps until we begin the climb up to it, peaking at 2800m!! Needless to say, this trip is for those who can be prepared. Some days we will leave the valley floor in shorts and sandals, to then only be found digging out the down jackets and trousers by lunchtime!!
Day 1 and 2 - Transit days from the uk to the surrounding area at the base of the "Top of Europe".
Day 3 - we spend the day heading up the mountain via both vehicle and train. There will be the opportunity to go for walks in the mountains or hire canoes on the lake.
Day 4 - we head south west transitting along the northern edge of the Massif du Mont Blanc, before finding camp south of Mont Joly. This day includes a vehciel train through the mountains!!
Day 5 - This is our first day where we'll hunt out some forts and explore new tracks as we make our way towards the Italian border.
Day 6 - Today we cross into Italy, spending the majority of the day looking for that elusive off-the-beaten-track Fort with a lake and a view across Italy.
Day 7 - Crossing back into France, we spend some time in the highest town in the Alps. We continue to push south before relaxing near to the River Durance, one of the tributaries leading into the one of the largest reservoirs in France.
day 8 - Our final day on the tracks. We've arguably saved the best to last. Imagine a stoney track winding up a valley to the top of the mountain stopping at an ominous set of doors into the rock. What is on the other side you'll have to come along to find out.
Day 9-10. We transit back north via first minor roads, but eventually motorway, stopping at a halfway point for the night before catching the Eurotunnel back into the uk.
